Interview with Paravel

A three man web design & branding agency from Austin. We gave Trent Walton, the founder of Paravel, an interview to give an insight into their great work. Enjoy!

Let's talk about Paravel. What sets your agency apart from other agencies? What's special about Paravel?

Paravel is a 3-man team.  We’ve been friends for over 15 years and have established really candid, yet comfortable working relationships with each other.  While we each have our own web development or design forte, no project ever gets passed down an inter-departmental assembly line.  We’re constantly collaborating, overlapping and slugging it out to be sure we’re doing the best work we’re capable of, not individually but as a team.

Does the fact that you're from Austin influence your work or inspire you in anyway?

Yes.  I love Austin and the Texas Hill Country.  We’re proud to be a part of the creative community here, and we gather inspiration from what lies outside our doors regularly.  The Texas scenery is great and all, but the saddle-sized chicken fried steaks and the BBQ brisket ain’t half bad either.

What do you think is the worst thing that can happen when you're working on a project? How do you cope with sluggish workflow and what do you think are the best conditions to realize a project?

Communication breakdown.  It is so important to remember that clients hire you for your expertise and that you have to devote time to educate them about the web.  From the beginning, we’ve never believed it’s only about photoshop and HTML coding.  It’s our duty to be advocates for the web design craft, teaching clients not only about what we deliver, but all the ins, outs and what-have-yous encountered during the creative process.

What do you think defines a good designer and creative design ?

Growing up, my father spent many of his weekend and evening hours working on cars out in the garage.  Witnessing the amount of time & effort he put into hammering out fenders or assembling an engine had a major influence on how I view the creative process.  Good design takes patience, practice and lots of hard work.  The designers I admire most aren’t just good, they’re working to get better.

What would you consider to be your dream project ?

I’d have to say Paravel itself.  Starting a company hasn’t been easy or glamorous, but it has definitely been an adventure.  Being in control of your own destiny (or at least as much as you can be in business) is great. Having the ability to call your own shots and select the projects that interest you is priceless.  Our work is always changing and always challenging and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Thanks a lot for participating.
